California Highway Patrol, Cal Fire – Riverside, and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene around 5:50 a.m., according to CHP and a Cal Fire social media release.

When officials arrived, they found witnesses and good Samaritans attempting to help those injured in the collision.

Two vehicles, described as a black Ford Explorer and white Chevy Equinox, that both sustained major front-end damage, were left blocking the roadway while a white Honda Civic that was also involved was found nearby.

Firefighters found the driver of the Ford trapped and injured inside the mangled wreckage of his SUV and began a cut and rescue operation to free him from his vehicle.

They also found that the female driver of the Chevy had suffered major traumatic injuries and despite extensive life-saving efforts, first by witnesses and then by Cal Fire firefighter/paramedics, she succumbed to her injuries and passed away at the scene.

The Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office has since identified Demiris Reid, 65, of Nuevo, as the woman killed in the collision. A Coroner’s release indicated she was pronounced deceased at 6:08 a.m.

Firefighters spent around 45 minutes extricating the driver of the Ford, before he was transported by ground ambulance to Riverside County Health Services trauma center in Moreno Valley for treatment of injuries that Cal Fire later described as serious.

The driver of the Honda was uninjured.

Responding to RCNS requests for further information regarding the deadly collision, CHP Officer Juan Quintero explained, “The preliminary investigation suggests a black Ford Explorer was traveling eastbound Cajalco Road. A White Honda Civic was also traveling Eastbound Cajalco Road directly behind the Ford.”

“The driver of the Ford lost control and crossed over the double yellow lines colliding into a White Chevy Equinox traveling westbound on Cajalco Road,” Quintero continued; adding, “The Honda’s left front also collided into the left rear of the
Ford.”

Quintero was not immediately able to confirm if DUI was suspected and said CHP’s investigation is active and ongoing.
