Scene cleared & power restored after fiery Redding crash damages utility poles, causes power outage

REDDING, Calif., — Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of a fiery crash into two power poles that knocked out power to homes and businesses in the surrounding area and forced the temporary closure of East Street, north of Pine Street Friday morning, March 18.

City of Redding police and fire personnel were dispatched to the scene around 7 a.m., after receiving reports of a traffic accident that knocked down a Redding Electric Utility power pole, Redding Police Corporal Wes Townsley has since reported.

When officials began arriving, they found a red 2014 Chevy Camaro that had plowed into a pair of power poles, completely shearing one at the base and leaving the other damaged. The first officer at the scene updated that wood debris from the shattered pole appeared to have been contacted by one of the downed live power lines and was continuing to burn.

While firefighters extinguished the small fire, officers contacted the driver, Angel Porras-Jimenez, 25, of Redding.

Porras-Jimenez told officers he had to swerve off the road to avoid a collision with another vehicle that pulled into his lane of travel.

“His vehicle … collided with a REU power pole, sheering it completely off, and continued forward until he collided with a second REU pole. This collision also caused a power outage for a short time in surrounding businesses and residences,” Townsley explained.

A video filmed at the scene and shared to social media from R&R Quality Meats & Seafood, (which can be viewed below), showed the immediate aftermath of the high-speed crash, with a Redding police officer standing by waiting for the fire department to arrive and extinguish the burning debris left by the collision.
