Suspect leads Hemet Police On Wild Pursuit-Crashing Through Fence and Wall

On Nov. 22, at about 3:11 a.m., a Hemet Police officer attempted to stop a white Subaru Outback in the area of 1300 E. Florida Ave. The officer had recognized the vehicle as one reported as stolen from the unincorporated area of Hemet.

The driver of the vehicle failed to yield and attempted to elude the officer, at which time the officer initiated a vehicle pursuit. The suspect continued to flee at a high rate of speed through the east end of Hemet, without regard for the safety of pursuing officers or citizens.

The suspect eventually drove his vehicle into the Sundance Apartments, located at 178 N. Yale St. and continued at a dangerous and reckless rate of speed towards the southeast portion of the complex.

At the south-eastern end of the apartment complex parking lot, the suspect drove the stolen vehicle first through a chain link fence before smashing the car through a small retaining wall into the back yard of 2320 E. Florida Avenue. After driving through the brick wall, the stolen vehicle came to rest on a large pile of sand, disabling the car.

When the stolen car became disabled, the driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The passenger of the vehicle exited and immediately complied with the officer’s instructions and was temporarily detained.

Several other officers were already in the area due to the pursuit and the driver was located a short time later hiding in the rear parking lot of a nearby restaurant. The driver immediately gave up when he saw the approaching officer and was taken into custody without further incident.

The driver was identified as Jesse Delgado, an 18-year-old resident of San Bernardino. Delgado was booked at the Hemet Police station on charges of possession of stolen property and failure to yield/evading police. He was later transported to county jail, where his bail was set at $100,000.
