SOBOBA: Man arrested for negligent discharge of a weapon after firing more than 200 rounds into the air

SOBOBA – A resident of the Soboba Reservation was arrested after firing more than 200 rounds into the air in the early morning hours of Jan. 1.
Hemet Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 24000 block of Soboba Road, San Jacinto on the Soboba Reservation regarding multiple calls of shots being fired.

According to Sergeant Robert Duckett, of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, no one was injured during the shootings, although a nearby house and one or more vehicles were struck by several stray bullets associated with the incident.
Deputies from the Hemet Sheriff’s Station located the residence where the shooting originated. During their investigation, deputies found almost 200 expended shell casings near the residence related to the negligent discharge of the firearm.
A search of the suspect’s residence resulted in several firearms being collected.

Witnesses to the dangerous and potentially deadly incident described hearing countless bursts of automatic gunfire over a several-hours-long period of time and seeing military-style “tracers” being fired up into the air.
Deputies identified Roy Russel, 33-years-old, from the Soboba Reservation, as the primary shooter in the incident. Russell was arrested and booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility for the felony charge. A records check on Jan 2., the day following the incident revealed Russell had already been released from jail, pending his arraignment.
