Riverside Police arrest violent armed suspect following family disturbance

RIVERSIDE – Riverside Police officers arrested an intoxicated man after someone from his family called 911 to report a violent family disturbance. Upon arrival, one officer was forced to physically subdue the man, who walked out of the residence while armed with a large knife. The man was later booked into county jail for several crimes, including brandishing a weapon, felony vandalism, and resisting arrest.
Officers responded to a 911 call from the 3800 block of Lofton Place regarding a family argument at about 2:40 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30. A caller from the residence told police dispatchers that an adult son was intoxicated and violently vandalizing the inside of their residence.
When the first officer arrived, he made contact with the family members and had them exit the house, in order to isolate the unidentified adult son and ensure he was the only person inside the residence.
As the officer was waiting for additional officers to arrive and assist him, the adult son suddenly came out from the side yard, walking towards the officer in the front driveway. The officer attempted talking to subject when he noticed the man was holding a large knife. The man, who was acting in an aggressive manner, began walking down the driveway towards the officer, while challenging and threatening him with the knife.
In spite of the dangerous armed suspect’s threats and actions, the officer remained calm, issuing loud verbal commands for the man to drop the knife and get down on the ground. After a few tense minutes, the officer was able to convince the man to drop the knife and lay on the sidewalk.
The adult son cooperated at first, getting down onto the ground as the officer had instructed to. However the intoxicated man became increasingly belligerent and uncooperative, while the officer waited for back-up officers to arrive.
In spite of cooperating at first, the man once again became irate and combative, at which time the officer was forced to take action. A press release from Riverside Police officials explained, (the man) “began to get up off the sidewalk when a use of force occurred.”
Assisting officers quickly arrived and the intoxicated subject was taken into custody. The press release did not specify what type of force the officer used to subdue the violent, armed suspect or the nature of his injuries.
After officers arrested the man they transported him to a local hospital, where he received treatment for unspecified injuries related to the use of force. After receiving medical clearance, officers booked the man into the Robert Presley Detention Center for felony vandalism, brandishing a weapon and resisting arrest.
