Riverside Sheriff recruiting event planned for current/retired military and dependents

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department will be conducting pre-employment written examinations on Thursday, Feb. 18, at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Camp Pendleton, California. The open examinations will be offered in Building 1339 at Leatherneck Lanes from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Written Examinations will be for Deputy Sheriff Trainee and Correctional Deputy and will be open to all active/inactive military personnel and their dependents. Sheriff’s Department recruiters will be present for any questions prospective applicants might have.

Sworn Deputy Position

A sworn deputy sheriff is a commissioned employee empowered to continuously bear arms and perform the full range of peace officer duties as delegated by the Sheriff. It is the entry-level position in the department.

Duties

A deputy sheriff will perform a wide variety of law enforcement functions:

Patrol assigned beat areas
Investigate criminal acts and arrest criminal offenders
Enforce state laws and local ordinances and provide traffic enforcement
Serve and administer civil and criminal documents
Prepare police reports and ensure the safe storage of held property and/or evidence
Testify in court
Work on special enforcement details
Transport prisoners
Build relationships among local communities

Advanced Certification:

There are five jails, or correctional facilities, in Riverside County, all managed by the Sheriff’s Department Corrections Division, one of the largest jail operations in the state and throughout the country. Rules at the jail facilities are strictly enforced to protect visitors, corrections staff and inmates.

You start as a Correctional Deputy I on the corrections law enforcement career ladder. Once you have completed the 9-week academy, you are assigned to one of the county’s correctional facilities. Typical work shifts are 12 hours, and include weekends and holidays. A new correctional deputy must be available for any shift (i.e. swing, night, day, etc.).

Duties:

A correctional deputy works within the Sheriff’s jail system to control inmates:

Maintain security through key, door, tool & equipment control
Photograph prisoners, take fingerprints
Receive prisoners, process inmate correspondence & phone calls
Prepare & distribute paperwork, route booking sheets
Control contraband through routine facility and inmate searches
Supervise inmates during meals and recreational activities
Prepare prisoners for transport by applying restraint equipment and inspecting vehicles for safety
Perform business and record keeping functions
Administer medication to prisoners as prescribed by a physician

You can take an Introduction to Law Enforcement and Physical Conditioning for Basic Academy Students course through Moreno Valley College. The class meets Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Sheriff’s Ben Clark Training Center for one semester. It’s a great way to experience academy physical training and to meet training staff.
