UPDATE: Two suspects shot by deputy during Perris robbery investigation – 3 arrested, officials say
UPDATE 3/16/2016
PERRIS – Sheriff’s officials have released more information following an officer involved shooting that occurred during a robbery investigation on Tuesday morning, Mar. 15. Two alleged robbery suspects were shot and wounded during the incident, according to Deputy Michael Vasquez, public information officer for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. The robbery, shooting and subsequent hours-long search for the three alleged suspects reportedly caused at least two elementary schools to be placed on Lock Down, while deputies searched for the suspects involved in the robbery.
The incident began at about 11:00 a.m., when deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Perris Police Station responded to a 911 call from a victim reporting an armed robbery. The caller reported the robbery occurred near the intersection of Orange Avenue and Perris Boulevard, in the city of Perris. The victim, who has not been identified, told sheriff’s dispatchers he was robbed at knife-point by three adult male suspects who then fled the area in a white, late-model SUV.
As deputies converged on the area, a deputy spotted the suspect vehicle leaving the area of the incident. The deputy began following the vehicle as he radioed his location and updates to other responding deputies. The driver of the white SUV drove a short distance before abruptly entering a residential neighborhood, according to Vasquez.
As the deputy followed the SUV, the driver of the vehicle suddenly stopped near the intersection of Shark Street and Mako Lane. “The driver exited the vehicle and as the officer attempted to detain the suspects, an officer involved shooting occurred,” Vasquez said.
After the officer involved shooting, the driver, identified as Patrick Isaiah Shaw, 18, of Moreno Valley was taken into custody without further incident and was not injured. Immediately after the shooting, the two remaining suspects, who were both struck by the deputy’s gunfire, attempted to flee the area in the SUV.
“The two additional suspects drove a short distance before colliding with a curb and fleeing the vehicle on foot,” according to Vasquez. “After a short foot pursuit officers apprehended a second suspect within the 400 block of Dale Street.”
When deputies captured the second suspect, who was identified as Desean Stamps, 21, of San Diego, they found he was suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound that occurred during the initial traffic stop. Deputies immediately provided medical attention to Stamps and requested emergency first responders to their location. Paramedics evaluated and treated Stamps before they transported him to a local area hospital for further treatment.
The investigation continued for several more hours, as deputies, assisted by a sheriff’s helicopter, sheriff’s K9’s and the Riverside County Emergency Services Team (SWAT), conducted a yard to yard and door to door search of the residential neighborhood for the third and final suspect.
More than five hours after the incident began, deputies located the third suspect, identified as Jordan Taylor Swanson, 20, of San Diego. Deputies located Swanson hiding within the 1000 block of Dolphin Drive. When deputies found Swanson and were taking him into custody, they discovered he had also sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound from the initial traffic stop.
Deputies immediately provided Swanson medical treatment and requested assistance from emergency first responders. Paramedics evaluated and treated Swanson before they transported him to a local area hospital for further treatment.
Investigators from the department’s Central Homicide Unit responded and assumed the investigation.
“No officers were injured during the incident,” Vasquez said about the incident. “The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave per department policy. The involved officers’ names will not be released at this time.”
A jail records search showed Shaw was booked for armed robbery and conspiracy to commit a felony. He is being held in lieu of $30,000 bail. After receiving medical treatment, Swanson was booked for armed robbery, conspiracy and a no-bail, out-of-county warrant for a previous burglary.
As of this report, Stamps remained at a local hospital, where he was still being treated for a gunshot wound. According to Vasquez, he will be booked for armed robbery and conspiracy once he is released from the hospital.
The three alleged suspects are scheduled for arraignment at the Riverside Hall of Justice on Mar. 18, at 8:00 a.m.
“This is an active and ongoing investigation,” Vasquez stated about the robbery, shooting and subsequent arrests. “The Central Homicide Unit encourages anyone with information regarding this incident to contact Investigator Posson at (951) 955-2777 or Investigator Flores of the Perris Police Department at (951) 210-1000.”
