5-year-old struck by debris when car crashes into Moreno Valley home
MORENO VALLEY – A 73-year-old Moreno Valley resident driving his car suffered an unspecified medical emergency and crashed his small silver SUV into an occupied home Monday, May 23, according to Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant W. Stens. The crash occurred at 10:27 a.m., in the 23300 block of Via Montego, Moreno Valley.
A 5-year-old child who was playing in the garage at the time of the collision was struck by flying debris and complained of pain to his arm. Paramedics evaluated the child was evaluated at the scene and did not require further medical treatment. The driver suffered minor injuries in the crash and was transported to a local area hospital for further treatment.
Deputies and other emergency first responders arrived at the location within minutes and discovered a vehicle had struck several trees before crashing into the garage of the residence, where the 5-year-old was playing.

“The driver of the vehicle…suffered a medical emergency, which caused him to lose control of the vehicle and collide with the residence,” Stens explained. “It does not appear alcohol contributed to this collision.”
The intersection of Via Apolina and Via Montego was closed for about two hours while Cal Fire personnel stabilized the front of the residence. Southern California Edison and the Southern California Gas Company responded to the location to turn off utilities to the residence.
Cal Fire Public Information Officer Jody Hagemann described the damage to the residence as “significant” and estimated the house sustained about $100,000 in damage. The family of four who reside at the home were displaced due to structural damage.
