Juvenile, 17, arrested for domestic violence, assault on Hemet officer
HEMET – Officers responding to the report of a domestic violence incident in the 900 block of Roxanne Drive Friday, June, 24. The officer’s investigation led to a violent confrontation and short but dramatic foot pursuit over fences and through backyards in the residential neighborhood.
The suspect – who was later determined to be a 17-year old, juvenile male – has not been identified due to his age. Officers arrested the subject for felony domestic violence and assaulting a police officer. The alleged suspect was transported to Southwest Juvenile Hall after the incident.
The investigation and violent confrontation began at about 10:55 a.m., when a person called 911 to report a domestic violence related incident at a residence on Roxanne Drive.
Investigating officers determined the suspect allegedly struck and choked his girlfriend during a violent dispute. He had fled on foot from the residence before officers arrived, but he was located during a neighborhood search.
The female victim sustained minor injuries during the domestic violence altercation, according to a press release from the police department.
Officers searched the area in trying to locate and interview the juvenile to determine if a crime had been committed.
An officer located the young male at 11:16 a.m., while searching the neighborhood. (See attached Radio Log below.) The officer attempted to detain the subject for questioning. The juvenile refused to cooperate and violently resisted the officer, attempting to strike him in the face.
The juvenile continued to struggle with the officer and eventually broke free and fled eastbound on East Fruitvale Avenue. The officer pursued the fleeing subject on foot as other officers converged on the area to assist.
Within one minute of the suspect fleeing, Riverside County’s aviation crew was headed to the area to assist in the search.
Numerous responding officers began blocking off every avenue of the juvenile’s possible escape from the area, causing him to double back, jumping walls and fences until he ended up in the backyard of an unspecified residence on Roxanne Avenue.
Deputies from the Hemet Sheriff’s Station as well as four deputies from the sheriff’s Civil Bureau – who were in the area regarding an unrelated incident – responded to the area to assist in the search for the fleeing juvenile.
At 11:19 a.m., deputies from the sheriff’s helicopter crew spotted the subject and reported he was in the backyard of a residence on Roxanne Avenue and was attempting to force his way into the residence.
Believing the subject was attempting to conduct a home invasion robbery, the sheriff’s Aviation Crew used their P.A. system to advise the juvenile he was surrounded and had no chance of getting away. The Aviation Crew was heard repeatedly telling him to give up and come out to numerous officers and deputies who were converging into the area.
The defiant young man’s response was to flip off and mock law enforcement officials as they were closing in on him.
When officers finally approached the juvenile to take him into custody, he again resisted arrest and had to be physically subdued.
By 11:24 a.m., just five minutes after the short but tense incident began, the juvenile offender had been taken into custody.
