UPDATED – Yucaipa woman, 47, dies in rollover traffic accident on 60 freeway
UPDATED: 08/13/2016 2:45 a.m. With additional information from victim’s family.
MORENO VALLEY – A 47-year-old woman was killed in a three-vehicle, rollover traffic collision Thursday, August 11. The fatal accident happened on the eastbound SR60, about one mile east of Gilman Springs Road, in an unincorporated area east of Moreno Valley.
California Highway Patrol officers and other emergency first responders were dispatched to the scene of the accident after it was reported at 4:55 p.m. Despite efforts by emergency first responders, the victim succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Riverside County Coroner’s office later identified Edelmira Rodriguez, 47, of Yucaipa as the victim who died in the traffic collision. Her time of injury was listed as 4:53 p.m. Her time of death was listed as 5:14 p.m. According to the coroner’s release, the crash happened about one mile east of Gilman Springs Road.
14 firefighters from three Engine Companies and one Truck Company responded to the fatal rollover traffic accident. Firefighters performed a cut and rescue operation to extricate Rodriguez from her wrecked car, according to Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Public Information Officer Jennifer Fuhrman.
According to a CHP incident log, callers told CHP dispatchers that a grey Infiniti 250 traveling eastbound had collided with a blue Hyundai Sonata. The Infinti reportedly struck the side of the mountain before rolling over and coming to rest on its’ side and was facing the wrong way in traffic.
At 4:57 p.m., a different person called 911 to report a third vehicle had also been involved in a traffic collision in the westbound lanes of traffic. It was not immediately known if the two separate accidents were related to each other.
One of the subjects inside the Sonata suffered an unspecified seatbelt related injury to the chest and was transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital for further treatment.
Officials called for a temporary full closure of all traffic through that section of roadway at 5 p.m. Eastbound 60 traffic was diverted at Gilman Springs and westbound traffic was closed from the I-10 freeway.
The 60 was later reopened to through traffic. However, vehicles were seen moving very slowly through the area, as firefighters and other rescue personnel worked to extricate the victim and right the overturned car.
Rodriguez’ family has set up a gofundme account to help them raise money for her burial expenses, writing “Heaven gained another angel. Edelmira Alcaraz (Rodriguez) was a beautiful human being inside and out. She will be missed dearly by her 4 kids and 2 grandchildren. If anyone could please help with even a small donation, that would help greatly! Thank you, soo much.”
Joanna, Susanna, Anthony, Christian, and Luis, family members of the victim killed in the accident added in an email, “You left us too soon, you were the best mother in the world and we will forever cherish all the memories. We love you mom and we hope you rest in peace.”

Good afternoon Tevor,
The Infiniti (Q50) did not collide with the Hyundai Sonnata. The Infiniti and the Hyundai were in west bound. The Infiniti slammed on their brakes due to the roll over happening in coming on east side. With debris flying over west bound Hyundai slammed into back of Infiniti. Not only was Hyundai driver hurt, so was Infiniti driver. Very sad situation everyone tried to help the woman who passed. The infinti was not the cause of this accident as has been written my other local reporters. The Infiniti driver tried to help this woman.
Thank you for clarifying that. Do you mind if I include this in the actual report?
Hi Trevor. The Hyundai driver (Me) and the passenger were not hurt in the accident, and neither was the Infinity driver. Debri the flew on the westbound freeway was behind us when we were involved in the accident. The infinity driver stopped because of the horrific crash that was taking place. We all tried to help the woman who passed.
Thank you for trying to help my mother.
