Hemet pursuit leads to arrest and recovery of stolen vehicle
HEMET – A man was taken into custody by Hemet Police officers after leading them on a high-speed vehicle pursuit followed by a foot pursuit, Thursday, Aug. 11.
The alleged suspect was eventually located hiding inside a trash can by officers who were searching for him during the foot pursuit. The man was taken into custody in the 800 block of Topaz in Hemet.
After the man was found hiding in the trash can, officers identified him as Jacob Charles Telleson, 28, of Hemet.
The incident began at 10:49 p.m. when a Hemet Police Officer spotted a white Honda Civic driving east in the 1000 block of east Florida Avenue. Earlier in the day, officers had received information that a stolen white Honda Civic may be in the area and that the suspects may have swapped the license plates on the vehicle.
The officer began following the Honda and checked the license plate through the Hemet Police Dispatch Center. Dispatchers confirmed that the license plate had been reported stolen earlier that day.
Based on the previous information about the stolen vehicle and the fact that the plates on the vehicle had been reported stolen, the officer initiated a traffic stop by activating his overhead lights and siren. The driver of the Honda, who was later identified as Telleson, refused to yield and accelerated away, at which time the officer initiated a pursuit.
Telleson led officers on a brief pursuit through several residential neighborhoods in the southern part of the city. At one point Telleson managed to temporarily elude pursuing officers, at which time he attempted to cover his plate with a white caulking type substance. Despite his efforts, he was quickly relocated and the pursuit was re-initiated.
Telleson eventually led pursuing officers to the 800 block of West Thornton Avenue where he stopped the vehicle, jumped out of the stolen car, and fled on foot.
Officers quickly established a perimeter and began searching from yard to yard within the neighborhood. Telleson was eventually found hiding in a trashcan and was taken into custody.
Officers conducted a records check that revealed Telleson had an active ‘no bail’ warrant for his arrest.
During their investigation, officers also learned the Honda was a previously reported stolen vehicle and the license plate had been stolen from another vehicle.
Officers arrested Telleson and transported him to the Southwest Detention Center.
A jail record search revealed Telleson was booked on suspicion of felony evasion, possession of stolen property, violation of probation, and a warrant for two counts of felony evasion and three counts of theft with priors.
He is being held without bail and is scheduled to be seen at an unspecified court Aug. 16.
