RIVERSIDE: Three injured during rolling gun battle, 1 in “grave” condition
RIVERSIDE – Three people were shot, one in the head, after an early morning rolling gun battle erupted between two cars Saturday, Nov. 12. The shootings happened about 4:37 a.m., in the 1200 block of University Avenue at the intersection of Iowa Avenue in the City of Riverside.
The Riverside Police Department’s Communications Center received several 911 calls from citizens reporting a car-to-car shooting that had just occurred between two cars. The cars, described as a red or maroon Kia and a silver Dodge Charger, were traveling in the same direction on University Avenue when the shooting began.
Officers arrived in the area within minutes of the call being dispatched and located two wrecked vehicles. Both cars had subjects who had been injured during the shooting.
Officers quickly determined a male driver inside a red sedan had sustained a gunshot wound to the head. They also located a male driver and passenger near a silver sedan. The male passenger suffered a gunshot wound to his upper arm. The driver sustained unspecified injuries.
City of Riverside firefighter/paramedics treated all three subjects, before they were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The subject from the red sedan who sustained the head injury was listed in grave condition. The two subjects from the silver sedan were treated for minor injuries.
The officers’ preliminary investigation determined both vehicles were stopped at a red light on University Avenue at Iowa Avenue. Gunshots were exchanged between the occupants of both vehicles causing the injuries to the two subjects. After the shooting, the red sedan collided into a sign and the silver sedan plowed into a concrete light pole. The impact knocked the pole down to the ground, where it shattered into pieces.
Police officials have stated it is unknown at this time what led to this shooting.
Detectives from the Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Unit along with evidence technicians from the Forensics Unit responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. Detectives are being assisted by the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office and coroner’s officials.
The investigation is still ongoing at this time and no further details are available.
