UPDATE: PERRIS: Pedestrian and dog killed crossing busy street, victim ID’d

Coroner’s officials have identified the victim killed in last night’s vehicle versus pedestrian traffic accident as Jose Camarillo, 56, of Perris.

Camarillo and his dog were struck by a 61-year-old motorist while the two were attempting to cross westbound 4th Street, 132 feet west of Park Avenue in Perris.

The fatal accident happened at 4:57 p.m. Camarillo succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel at 5:13 p.m.

PERRIS – A pedestrian and his dog were killed while crossing a busy street Thanksgiving day, Thursday, Nov. 24. The two died after being struck by a passing motorist while they were attempting to cross 4th Street near Park Avenue in Perris.

The pedestrian killed in the accident has not yet been identified, pending notification of his family.

Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Perris Police Station and other emergency first responders were dispatched to the scene of the accident after Riverside County emergency dispatchers received multiple 911 calls from citizens reporting the vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision at 4:57 PM, according to Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant J.P. Strang.

Seven firefighters from one engine company responded to the fatal accident, Cal Fire /Riverside County Fire Spokeswoman Jody Hagemann said after the accident.

When they arrived, emergency first responders found a man who had sustained major traumatic injuries after being struck by a black Hyundai. A dog that the man had been walking was also struck. Both the man and his dog succumbed to their injuries and died at the scene.

Riverside County Animal Control officers were summoned to the scene of the accident to recover the remains of the dog killed in the collision.

After the accident, motorists who drove past the collision scene took to social media, discussing the deadly wreck. Many who saw the covered remains of the dog that was killed believed a child had been struck and killed.

The Perris Station’s Traffic Reconstruction Unit responded to the location to conduct an investigation into the fatal accident. While deputies conducted their investigation the westbound lanes of 4th Street were closed for several hours. The roadway was re-opened about 9 p.m.

During their initial investigation, deputies determined the Hyundai was traveling westbound on 4th Street when the pedestrian attempted to cross the roadway with his dog.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 61-year-old Perris resident remained at the scene of the fatal collision and was cooperating with investigators. The driver received serious injuries and he was transported by ground ambulance to an area hospital, according to Hagemann.

The investigation is active and ongoing.

      • Hi Trevor, can you add: survived by his one and only child Rubyanna Solis of Lucerne, Ca, granddaughter Monica Maldonado of Ukiah, Ca. and his other granddaughter Alicia Maldonado of Lucerne, Ca. He has multiple brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews. I can try to get everybody’s correct name spelling and living locations if you would like. He was a great guy who would go out of his way to help anybody. He would even give up what he had just so someone that needed it wouldn’t go without. He was always helping family. He looked like a big scary man but. Inside he was the biggest teddy bear with the biggest heart. He loved him dog like he was a child.
