RIVERSIDE – A man who allegedly shot at two Riverside police officers was arrested after a lengthy stand off in a Riverside neighborhood Sunday, Dec. 11.

The potentially deadly incident began at 9:08 p.m., when officers attempted to stop Corona at 7th Street and Franklin Avenue in the City of Riverside.

Corona refused to stop and fled on foot from the officers. While he was running away, Corona pulled out a handgun and fired a single shot in the direction of the officers.

Officers, who were not injured from the gunshot fired at them, put out an emergency call for assistance and gave chase. During the foot pursuit, officers lost sight of Corona on Loma Vista Street, east of Kansas Avenue.

Numerous officers, K9 handlers and the department’s Air Support Unit converged on the area and established a tactical perimeter.

While officers were conducting a yard-to-yard search, a resident in the 2000 block of West Linden Street called 911 to report that a man had entered their home and said the police were chasing him and he needed to hide.

Officers surrounded the residence and confirmed the suspect who shot at them was inside. Officials made numerous announcements for Corona to exit the house and surrender but he refused to come out of the home.

METRO (SWAT) and Emergency Negotiations Teams were called out and detectives also responded to assist. Officials obtained a search warrant and the METRO Team eventually made entry into the residence.

While searching the home, Metro Team members and a police K9 located Corona hiding inside the residence and apprehended him. Officers also located the firearm they believe Corona used in the shooting.

Corona was transported to a local hospital for medical clearance prior to booking.

A jail record search revealed Corona was booked into jail on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder on a police officer and using a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was being held in lieu of $1.12 million dollars.
