JURUPA VALLEY: Deputy shoots and wounds man armed with weapon

JURUPA VALLEY – A deputy shot and wounded an armed man who advanced on the official during a traffic stop Friday, Feb. 10. The shooting happened during a traffic enforcement stop on Canal Street west of La Rue Street in Jurupa Valley.

The incident began about 12:50 p.m., when a deputy from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Jurupa Valley Police station stopped the driver of a white GMC Yukon after observing a vehicle code violation, according to Riverside County Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Sergeant Chris Durham.

During the traffic stop the deputy asked the driver to exit the SUV. When the driver exited the vehicle, the deputy saw the man was armed with a weapon. The suspect immediately became combative, according to Durham.

While still armed with the weapon, “the suspect advanced toward the officer,” Durham explained. “The driver refused verbal commands to drop the weapon and an officer-involved shooting occurred.”

Officials have not specified the type of weapon the suspect was allegedly armed with.

After shooting the suspect, the deputy put out an emergency call for assistance and requested paramedics and additional deputies to respond to the location.

Firefighter/paramedics treated the suspect for a gunshot wound before AMR medics transported the man to an area hospital for further treatment. He is listed in stable condition

Authorities have not released the suspect’s name or age yet.

Investigators from the Riverside County Sheriff Department’s Central Homicide Unit responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

Deputies cordoned off the area where the shooting occurred, diverting traffic away from the scene while investigators conducted an investigation into the shooting incident.

Witnesses could see forensic technicians from the department’s Forensic Services Bureau documenting, photographing, and collecting evidence at the scene several hours after the shooting was reported.

No deputies or other citizens were injured during the shooting incident.

The deputy, who has not been identified, was placed on administrative leave per Department policy.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
