REDDING: K-9 sniffs out woman who fled from officers in stolen car
REDDING — Police arrested a 22-year-old Redding woman after she was spotted by an officer in a stolen vehicle, then ran from the car, hiding inside a crowded mobile home park, Sunday, Aug. 20.
After officials used a K-9 to track and locate the woman they arrested Shaina Kylie Tanner. She was later booked into Shasta County Jail on suspicion of vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to appear in court and violation of probation.
The investigation that led to Tanner’s arrest began about 11:30 p.m., when Officer Joshua Siipola observed a white Honda Civic speeding through the parking lot of a trailer park on Cedars Road, Redding Police Sgt. Shawn McGinnis explained in a written press release after the incident and arrest.
When the officer attempted to catch up to the speeding car the driver, later identified as Tanner, she stopped the Honda and fled on foot, hiding in the mobile home park.
Other officials, including Officer Jeff Schmidt and his K-9 “Abel” responded to the mobile home park to assist in locating Tanner.
After completing a sniff of the Honda’s driver’s seat, K-9 Abel began to track the Tanner’s scent and quickly located the woman “hiding between a shed and a fence a short distance away,” said McGinnis.
Realizing she had been discovered, Tanner gave up and was taken into custody without further incident.
Officials conducted a records check on the Honda, which indicated the registered owner lived about three miles away on Cumberland Drive in Redding. Although the car was not listed as a stolen vehicle, officials contacted the owner of the Honda, who advised nobody had permission to be driving his vehicle, which he believed was parked in front of his residence.
At the conclusion of their investigation, officers released the stolen car back to its rightful owner.
An online jail records search revealed Tanner remains in custody, held on $17,000 bail.
