TEMECULA — A woman who was sweeping broken glass out of a busy Temecula roadway was hit and killed in an early-morning, vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision, Tuesday, Aug. 22. The fatal accident happened in the area of SR-79/Temecula Parkway and Butterfield Stage Road in Temecula.

Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Temecula Police Station responded to the accident about 1:03 a.m., after 911 callers reported the major-injury collision, Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant William Pratt explained in a written press release after the incident

When deputies and other emergency first responders arrived at the scene, they found a female pedestrian who had been struck by a vehicle. The woman, who officials have not yet identified, suffered major traumatic injuries. Despite medical intervention, the victim succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Based on the circumstances, members of Temecula PD’s Traffic Unit responded to the location and assumed the investigation.

During their investigation, officials determined the victim had been sweeping up broken bottles in the intersection when she was fatally struck by a sedan traveling east on Temecula Parkway.

While officials investigated the cause of the fatal collision, they called for the temporary closure of the intersection to ensure the safety of police and fire officials.

The intersection remained closed for several hours while officials conducted their investigation.

“There are no initial indications alcohol played a role in the collision,” said Pratt.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Deputy Opice at the Temecula Police Department at (951) 696-3000. Callers can refer to incident file number TE172340003 and can remain anonymous. Citizens may also submit a tip using the Sheriff’s CrimeTips online form.

This makes no sense. How do they know her exact age but not her identity. Why does it say that they are withholding her identity until they contact NOK *and* that she is unidentified?

    • I think I could have/should have worded that better, Theresa. From what I understand they somehow have an idea who she is, either from an ID, license or something but they have not been able to find a next of kin for an “official” ID and confirmation of who they believe she might be. I have had a number of people contact me who think she resided in Anza inside an older RV. If it is/was her, that woman they know had no next of kin…so, that could be the issue.

Regardless of all that, my title is/was confusing.
