REDDING: Victim stabbed while attempting to stop bike theft from residence
REDDING — Authorities are searching for an alleged bicycle thief they say stabbed a homeowner twice when the victim attempted to stop the man from stealing a bike from his side yard, Tuesday evening, Sept. 12. The violent incident happened near the corner of Virgo and Nebula Streets, east of Alta Mesa Drive, in Redding.
City of Redding police officers were dispatched to the residence about 9:13 p.m., after SHASCOM dispatchers received a 911 call reporting the incident.
When officers arrived, they located the victim, 36-year-old, George Lee Casey. He “was suffering from two, non-life threatening, stab wounds,” Redding Police Corporal Harris explained in a written press release.
Casey told officers investigating the stabbing he had been at his residence when he “heard noises coming from his side yard and went to investigate,” said Harris. As the victim went to his side yard, he spotted a man attempting to ride away on Casey’s mountain bicycle.
“When the victim attempted to stop the theft, (he) became involved in a physical altercation with the suspect,” Harris explained. “During the altercation, the victim was stabbed twice with an unknown object.”
Casey described the suspect as a Hispanic male, about 40-45-years-old, approximately 5’10″, with medium build. He was last seen wearing dark clothing as he rode away on the victim’s bicycle.
Casey estimated his bike’s value to be about $4,500 and he described it as hunter green that had been spray painted blue. Officials did not specify the make or model of the bike or if it had any distinguishing marks or characteristics.
Officials provided no further information regarding the full nature and extent of Casey’s injuries.
Anyone with information about the bicycle theft and stabbing is encouraged to contact Corporal Harris of the Redding Police Department at (530) 225-4200. Callers can refer to incident file number 17-67436 and can remain anonymous.
