ORIGINAL STORY:

MURRIETA — A bicyclist died after he was struck by a motorist Sunday, Dec. 3. The deadly accident happened on the 24000 block of Washington Avenue, near Davenport Way, in Murrieta.

City of Murrieta Police and Fire personnel and other emergency first responders were dispatched to the scene of the deadly wreck about 5:57 p.m., after the City’s Dispatch Center received a 911 call reporting a major-injury traffic collision involving a bicyclist, Murrieta PD Traffic Sergeant Sandra O’Donnell explained after the incident.

When officials arrived at the scene they found a 43-year-old, male bicyclist suffering from major, traumatic head injuries sustained in the collision.

“The bicyclist was transported to Inland Valley Hospital by AMR,” said O’Donnell. He later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by hospital staff.

The victim’s name has not been released and has been withheld, pending further investigation and notification of the man’s family.

During a subsequent investigation, officers determined the bicyclist and the driver of a white Pontiac van were both traveling Northbound on Washington Avenue just before the accident happened between Lemon Street and Davenport Way.

Officials are still working to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the deadly crash.

The male driver of the van was not injured, according to O’Donnell, who said drug and/or alcohol intoxication do not appear to be contributing factors in the crash.

Murrieta PD’s Traffic Bureau has requested any witnesses who have not yet contacted a traffic investigator to contact Traffic Investigator Jennifer Metoyer at (951) 461-6375. Callers can refer to incident file number 1712M-0513 and can remain anonymous.
