PERRIS: Deputies investigating family disturbance shoot, injure gun-wielding man

PERRIS — A man armed with a firearm was shot by deputies investigating reports of a family disturbance at a Perris residence last night. The man, who was struck by deputies’ gunfire at a home on the 1100 block of Camino Del Sol, survived the shooting with non-life-threatening injuries, according to sheriff’s officials.

Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Perris Police Station were dispatched to the home about 9:20 p.m., Friday, Apr. 13, after receiving unspecified reports of a disturbance between family members at the location, Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant Chris Willison explained the morning after the shooting.

When deputies arrived at the scene they “observed a male suspect holding a firearm,” said Willison.

“Officers gave verbal commands and instructed the male to drop the firearm,” Willison explained. “The suspect ignored the officer’s commands and pointed the firearm towards the officers, resulting in an officer involved shooting.”

In spite of being struck by at least one of the rounds fired at him, the man “remained uncooperative” with deputies – refusing to listen to or obey their commands, at which time a Sheriff’s K-9 was deployed to help take the confrontational and injured man into custody.

Once he was in custody, AMR medics transported the injured suspect to an area hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the incident.

The suspect’s name has not yet been released, pending further investigation.

After the shooting, investigators from the Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit responded and assumed the investigation.

The officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave per department policy and their names will not be released at this time, according to Willison, who explained no deputies or other citizens were injured as a result of the incident and shooting.
