MENIFEE: Perris man, 27, walking in lanes of Hwy 74, killed by hit and run driver

MENIFEE — A 27-year-old Perris man died after he was struck while walking in the westbound lanes of Highway 74. The fatal hit and run happened early Saturday morning, May 12, between Briggs and McKinley Roads in Menifee.

Emergency first responders were dispatched to the scene shortly after 1 a.m., after receiving reports of a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision.

When officials arrived, they found a male victim down in the roadway with major injuries. The victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene, Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant Marshall explained after the fatal incident. The driver fled the scene prior to deputies’ arrival.

The victim’s name has not yet been released, pending further investigation and notification of the man’s family.

Members of Menifee PD’s Traffic Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. Team members determined the pedestrian had been walking in the #2 lanes of westbound Highway 74 when he was struck by a vehicle that then fled the scene.

Officials have not provided any information regarding the vehicle that fatally struck the victim.

During their investigation, deputies called for the temporary closure of Highway 74, between Briggs Road and McKinley Road. Officials re-opened the roadway at 6:30 a.m.
