UPDATE: Officials investigating murder-suicide involving mother and son ID pair

MECCA — Officials have identified two people who died in a suspected murder-suicide last week. The pair, reported to be a mother and son, both died at the scene of the shooting, which happened on the 53000 block of Cesar Chavez Street, in the unincorporated community of Mecca.

Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner officials identified today 56-year-old, Lourdes Guillen Alvarez and Alejandro Alvarez, 36, as the pair who died in the incident. According to a coroner’s release, both subjects were pronounced deceased at 5:54 p.m., when officials arrived at the scene.

Officials investigating the deadly incident have not provided any further details regarding their investigation, which is active and ongoing.

The deadly incident happened at the Cedar Springs apartments on the 53000 block of Cesar Chavez Street, between 62nd and 64th Avenues, in the unincorporated community of Mecca, north of the Salton Sea.

Deputies assigned to the Coachella Police Station were dispatched to the apartment complex at 5:44 p.m., after receiving a 911 from a person reporting a homicide.

The 911 caller told emergency dispatchers he had just returned home to his apartment and “found two deceased family members inside,” Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant Wallace Clear explained after the incident.

Deputies arrived within minutes and located the two deceased individuals.

Based on the circumstances, investigators from the Thermal Station and Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

According to KESQ, Riverside County Sheriff’s investigators have said their investigation uncovered that the son killed his mother before taking his own life. The gruesome scene was discovered and reported to law enforcement by a younger brother in the family.

Officials have not released the names of the family members involved, pending further investigation and notification of the victim’s family.
