Hwy 111 bicyclist critically injured after plowing into stopped van
INDIAN WELLS — A bicyclist was hospitalized and remains in critical condition after the rider smashed into the back of a mini-van on Hwy 111 between Province Way and Cook Street Monday morning, March 25.
Despite earlier media reports that the motorist had struck the bike rider, officials later clarified that it was the bicyclist who struck the stopped Dodge mini-van, while traveling westbound on Hwy 111.

Deputies assigned to Indian Wells Police Department and other emergency personnel responded to the area shortly before 11 a.m., after receiving reports of a major injury traffic collision involving a bicyclist and vehicle, Riverside Sheriff’s Sgt. Randy Vasquez later explained.
“The male bicyclist suffered major injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in critical condition,” said Vasquez.
The motorist remained at the scene and was cooperating with Traffic Team deputies investigating the collision.
During their preliminary, on-scene investigation, Traffic Team members initially called for the partial closure of Hwy 111 between Province Way to Cook St. However, the partial closure was later extended to Eldorado Dr. due to heavy traffic and congestion that had soon clogged other area side streets. The roadway was reopened at the conclusion of the investigation.
Although officials say alcohol was not a factor in the deadly collision, their investigation to determine the cause of the crash is ongoing.
Anyone who witnessed the collision or has further information is asked to contact Deputy Conoway from the Indian Wells Police Department’s Traffic Team at (760) 836-1600. Callers can refer to incident file number J190840009 and can remain anonymous.
