MONTGOMERY CREEK — A wanted felon with multiple warrants – who officials allege fired a rifle at another man in a Montgomery Creek business parking lot last Wednesday evening, Nov. 27 – was apprehended by officials during a Burney traffic stop Tuesday, Dec. 3.

The man, 24-year-old, Shane Montgomery, of Montgomery Creek, now sits in jail on multiple felony charges related to last week’s shooting, as well as his warrants.

Deputies from the Burney Sheriff’s Station began investigating the shooting shortly before 9 p.m., after employees at Montgomery Creek Market called 911 to report the incident.

Although all the involved parties had fled the area prior to deputies’ arrival, officials soon discovered store surveillance footage that showed the shooting.

In the video the 28-year-old shooting victim, Matreyo Mastrangelo-Mitchell, can be seen sitting in his car while parked in the store’s parking lot. Montgomery can then be seen arriving at the store, exiting his vehicle with a “long gun” or rifle, and then firing one round at Mitchell as he fled the area in his car.

Sheriff’s officials had previously said Mitchell was not injured during the shooting.

Although deputies continued searching for Montgomery throughout the remaining evening and next morning, they were not able to immediately locate the alleged gunman.

As their investigation was continuing, deputies designated this case a “High Priority” due to believing Montgomery was still armed and dangerous due to the nature of the crime, Shasta County Sheriff’s Sgt. Marc St.Clair reported after Montgomery’s apprehension.

Over the next several days after the shooting, deputies “diligently searched out Montgomery’s known associates” throughout the Intermountain area, with their focus being the Round Mountain and Montgomery Creek areas, as well as the surrounding communities, according to the Sgt.

As the search was continuing yesterday afternoon, at around 2:30 p.m., a Fish and Wildlife Warden was patrolling the woods near Black Ranch Road and the old McCloud Railroad in Burney when he came upon a silver Jeep Liberty.

The Warden initiated a traffic enforcement stop on the vehicle and soon learned Shane Montgomery was a passenger in the SUV.

The Warden immediately detained Montgomery and requested Burney Station deputies respond to the scene to assist.

When deputies arrived they took custody of Montgomery and questioned him about his involvement in last week’s shooting.

“Montgomery later admitted to the shooting and was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, negligent discharge of a firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to St.Clair. He was later booked into Shasta County Jail in Redding on those charges, as well as his outstanding warrants.

MONTGOMERY CREEK — Authorities are continuing to search for a man they say opened fire on another man in the Montgomery Creek Market parking lot Wednesday evening, Nov. 27. Both the alleged suspect and victim are Montgomery Creek residents according to officials, who have not specified if there was a known motive for the shooting or what led to the violent incident.

Although the alleged suspect is still believed to be armed and dangerous, officials have said they do not believe there is any danger to the general public, “at this time.”

Deputies from the Shasta County Sheriff’s Burney Station were dispatched to the market at 30344 State Highway 299E around 8:45 p.m., after receiving reports of a shooting at the location, Shasta County Sheriff’s Sgt. Kyle Wallace reported as the investigation was getting underway.

When deputies arrived at the store they found the involved parties had already left the area, but officials were eventually able to locate the 28-year-old shooting victim, Matreyo Mastrangelo-Mitchell, who was not injured during the shooting, according to Wallace.

During their subsequent investigation deputies learned the shooting, which happened around 8:15 p.m., was captured on the store’s video surveillance system.

While reviewing the surveillance footage, deputies saw the video showed Mitchell sitting in his vehicle in the market’s parking lot when 24-year-old, Montgomery Creek resident, Shane Montgomery, drove into the lot.

“Montgomery was seen exiting his vehicle with what appears to be a long gun,” Wallace described.

As Mitchell attempted to flee from the area in his vehicle, Montgomery can be seen firing his weapon at him, the surveillance footage showed.

Although deputies attempted to locate Montgomery throughout the evening, they were not able to immediately locate him and their search is continuing.

The Sheriff’s investigation is ongoing and officials have asked that anyone with information about this investigation or who knows Montgomery’s whereabouts to contact Shasta County Sheriff’s Office at (530) 245-6540. Callers can refer to incident file number 19S043574 and can remain anonymous.
