UPDATE: Redding bicyclist, 67, ID’d after fatal crash

REDDING, Calif. — A man was killed after being involved in a solo-vehicle crash while riding his bicycle in Redding early Saturday evening, June 13. The victim was not wearing a helmet at when the accident occurred, according to Redding PD.

Officials have since identified the victim of the crash, which happened on College View Dr. east of Bethel Church, as 67-year-old, Sean Patrick Ohara, of Redding.

City of Redding police and fire personnel were alerted to the deadly accident at 6:35 p.m., after receiving reports of a crash involving a bicyclist, Redding Police Cpl. Rob Garnero reported after the accident.

911 callers reported finding an adult male injured and unresponsive next to his bicycle, according to the Cpl.

When officials arrived at the scene they found the bicyclist, since identified as Ohara, still down and unresponsive along the roadway.

Paramedics rushed O’Hara by ground ambulance to Mercy Medical Center where he later succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

“(Ohara) suffered major injuries as a result of the collision and was pronounced deceased at the hospital by emergency personnel,” Shasta County Chief Deputy Coroner Lt. Gunsauls reported earlier today. “(His) next-of-kin have been notified and a postmortem examination will be scheduled.”

Although there were no witnesses to the accident, Garnero said, “Evidence suggests that (Ohara) was riding his bicycle eastbound on College View Dr., down the hill from Bethel Church, when he lost control of the bicycle and crashed into the curb bordering the roadway.”

“The investigation revealed (Ohara) was not wearing a helmet and there was moderate damage to his bicycle as a result of the collision,” explained Garnero; saying, “It is unknown if the male victim was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the collision.”

After the fatal crash, Garnero used the opportunity to remind area residents regarding the dangers of riding bicycles on city streets and admonished citizens to “always wear a helmet, to exercise proper bicycle safety, and to obey all traffic laws.”

Redding PD’s investigation into the fatal accident is continuing.

Trevor has been married for more than 29 years and was a foster parent to more than 60 children over 13 years. He is now an adoptive parent and his “fluid family” includes 13 children and 16 grandchildren.
