CHP – Riverside officers and other emergency responders were dispatched to the 91 Freeway west of Central Avenue around 12:40 p.m. after receiving reports of “highway violence” with serious injuries, CHP Officer Juan Quintero has since said of the “unusual incident.”

When officers and medical personnel arrived at the scene they found a woman who had been stabbed and slashed several times in the face and head area by her passenger, since identified as Kimberly A. Cain, a 50-year-old Riverside resident.

After the violent attack, the victim managed to pull over, at which time Cain fled on foot prior to officers’ arrival.

The victim was treated at the scene by Riverside Fire Department and was later transported to a local hospital for treatment of her knife wounds and other injuries. Her current condition was not immediately known.

Officers eventually located Cain hiding near the freeway and she was apprehended without further incident. She was subsequently booked into Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

Despite the severity of the crime, online jail records indicate Cain was released a few hours after being booked with a citation to appear in court at a later date.

Anyone who witnessed any part of this incident and has not yet provided a statement to authorities is encouraged to contact CHP’s Accident Investigation Unit at (951) 637-8000. Callers can remain anonymous.
