Red Bluff man, 34, killed trying to run across Hwy 44

REDDING, Calif. — Authorities say a pedestrian was fatally struck by an SUV while trying to run across Highway 44 this morning, Tuesday, June 1. The fatal accident happened near Hilltop Drive just before 8:30 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol.

CHP and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a body in the lanes of traffic, according to a CHP incident log.

When officials arrived they determined the victim, a 34-year-old man from Red Bluff whose name has not yet been released, had already succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the scene.

Due to traffic quickly backing up, a traffic break was called for and motorists were diverted away from the scene, while officials investigated the cause of the fatal collision.

CHP has since reported that a Redding man was driving eastbound on Highway 44 near Hilltop Drive when the victim darted into the roadway from the cover of nearby bushes.

As the victim ran in front of the SUV, the driver was not able to stop in time and struck him, CHP explained; saying their investigation is continuing.

Trevor’s assignments included Corrections, Patrol, DUI Enforcement, Boat and Personal Water-Craft based Lake Patrol, Off-Road Vehicle Enforcement, Problem Oriented Policing Team, and Personnel/Background Investigations. He finished his career while working as a Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Investigator and was a court-designated expert in child abuse and child sex-related crimes.

Trevor has been married for more than 30 years and was a foster parent to more than 60 children over 13 years. He is now an adoptive parent and his “fluid family” includes 13 children and 18 grandchildren.
