Deputies from the Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station, along with CAL FIRE-Riverside and other emergency personnel, were dispatched to the scene at 7:50 p.m. after receiving reports of a major injury traffic collision, Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant Joe Narciso has since reported.

Officials arrived at the scene within minutes and found two involved vehicles described as a white Mercedes SUV and red Toyota sedan, with a total of six victims, according to a CAL FIRE release.

One of the victims succumbed to their injuries and passed away at the scene, according to CAL FIRE; who reported that five additional patients suffered injuries ranging from minor to critical.

“Both critical patients have been transported by ground ambulance to an area hospital,” CAL FIRE explained at the time.

Based on the circumstances, members of the Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station Traffic Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the location and assumed the investigation.

During their preliminary investigation, Traffic Team deputies determined the Mercedes SUV was traveling southbound on Lasselle Street approaching John F. Kennedy Drive just before the collision. At the same time, the Toyota sedan was traveling northbound on Lasselle Street.

“For an unknown reason, the Mercedes crossed into opposing traffic and struck the Toyota,” Narciso explained; adding, “The driver of the Toyota was pronounced deceased at the scene by paramedics.”
