Alleged burglar who fought with Redding resident taken down by officers & K-9
REDDING, Calif., — Authorities say an Oregon man who fought with a Redding resident after being interrupted while burglarizing the victim’s apartment was eventually apprehended after first fleeing from and then fighting with both officers and a police K-9 Tuesday, Sept. 14.
The interrupted burglary occurred at the Woodland Apartments complex in the 2900 block of Polk Street, just north of Ellis Street.

Redding Police officers were dispatched to the area around 9:50 p.m. after receiving reports of an interrupted residential burglary, Redding Police Corporal Ryan Ellis later said of the incident and arrest.
The victim had returned home to find an unknown man ransacking his apartment; according to Ellis; who explained that the suspect, since identified as Geoffrey Warren McKay, 24, of Klamath Falls, Oregon, “had rummaged through the victim’s apartment and had packaged up various items to steal.”
Upon confronting McKay, the would-be burglar assaulted the victim and the two became involved in a physical fight.
McKay was eventually able to flee on foot from the apartment and the victim was able to call 911 and report the interrupted burglary.
Responding officers arrived within minutes and spotted McKay running through the neighborhood.
When the fleeing man saw officers approaching he attempted to elude apprehension by running from them.
Although officers caught up with McKay after a short foot pursuit, he “violently resisted arrest” and Redding PD’s K-9 Chase “was deployed and assisted arresting officers in overcoming Geoffrey McKay’s resistance,” Ellis described.
McKay was transported to the hospital for medical treatment of injuries he sustained in fighting with the resident followed by his apprehension and arrest.
He was later booked into the Shasta County Jail in Redding on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, residential burglary and resisting arrest. Online jail records indicate he remains in custody in lieu of $50,000 bail or bond.
