Jurupa Valley woman, 58, killed and second driver hospitalized after Riverside head-on crash

RIVERSIDE, Calif., — Authorities say one driver was killed and another was hospitalized after a two-vehicle head-on crash in Riverside Friday afternoon, April 1. The deadly crash happened in the area of Mission Inn / Buena Vista Avenue and Mt. Rubidoux Drive and forced the hours-long closure of Mission Inn Avenue.

City of Riverside police and fire personnel were dispatched to the scene around 3:11 p.m. after receiving multiple reports of an unknown injury traffic collision, Riverside PD has since reported.

When officials arrived, they found two involved vehicles, described as a black 2018 Audi sedan and a red 2003 Chevy Trailblazer, that had collided head-on.

The driver of the Trailblazer, a 58-year-old Jurupa Valley woman, sustained major injuries and was transported to a local hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries and passed away. Her name has not been released pending further investigation and notification of her family.

The driver of the Audi, an 18-year-old male from Jurupa Valley, was also transported to a local hospital with moderate, non-life-threatening injuries.

During their subsequent investigation, officers determined the Audi was traveling eastbound on Buena Vista Avenue when, for an unknown reason, his vehicle crossed over into the opposing lanes of traffic and collided head-on with the Trailblazer.

While officials worked at the scene they called for the full, temporary closure of all lanes of Mission Inn Avenue, from Mount Rubidoux Drive in Riverside to Crestmore Road in Rubidoux. The only detour around the closure was to use the 60 Freeway, according to officials, who said significant delays in travel times were expected. The roadway was re-opened shortly before 9:30 p.m.

Officials have not yet ruled out alcohol and/or drug intoxication as contributing factors in the collision and Riverside PD’s investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with further information regarding this investigation is urged to call Riverside Police Traffic Detective G. Matthews at (951)826-8724 or by email.

This is a developing story that will be updated as new information becomes available.
