At around 4:20 p.m., a City of Redding police officer conducted a traffic enforcement stop on a vehicle being driven by 34-year-old Jonathan Fargo, Redding Police Corporal Aaron Hollemon has since reported.
“Officer Dalby noticed that Fargo appeared nervous and saw several gun cases on the back seat of the vehicle,” Hollemon explained, adding, “Fargo admitted to Officer Dalby that there were firearms inside the vehicle.”
During a subsequent search of the vehicle, the officer located four rifles, four handguns, and two shotguns according to Hollemon, who went on to say that one of the loaded handguns was found on the floorboard behind the center console and within easy reach of the driver.
The officer also found several thousand rounds of ammunition inside the vehicle and soon determined that three of the rifles found inside the vehicle were California-banned “assault” weapons.
Based on his investigative findings, the officer arrested Fargo and he was later booked into the Shasta County Jail in Redding on suspicion of carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle and possession of illegal assault weapons.
Online jail records indicate he has since been released and is no longer in custody.
Although Hollemon did not specify why Fargo claimed he was driving through Redding with the cache of firearms and large amount of ammunition, he used the opportunity to say, “The Redding Police Department would like to remind our community that there are specific restrictions on how firearms may be transported in a motor vehicle within the State of California.”
“We encourage you to contact the Redding Police Department or the California Department of Justice for more information,” he added.
