Man Fatally Shot By Deputies During Hammer Incident In Jurupa Valley

Jurupa Valley, Calif., A man fatally shot during an incident at a Jurupa Valley Subway restaurant has been identified by the Riverside County Coroner’s Office.
A press release from the Coroner’s office identified 31-year-old Hemet resident, Ramon Salazar, as the man involved in the fatal officer involved shooting.
According to Deputy Munoz, of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Media Information Bureau, on Nov. 14, at about 10:00 a.m., deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Jurupa Valley Station responded to the report of an unknown trouble call inside the Subway restaurant. The restaurant where the shooting occurred is located in the 2900 block of Rubidoux Boulevard.
The morning of the incident, sheriff’s Central Dispatch received a 911 call that Salazar was reportedly outside the restaurant smashing things with a hammer. A few minutes later, a frantic employee called 911 again to report Salazar had entered the restaurant, still armed with the hammer. At that point, the employees inside the restaurant fled into the back of the building.
When the deputies arrived, they found Salazar, still armed with a hammer and still inside the restaurant. When Salazar ignored repeated commands to drop the hammer, one of the deputies used a Taser against Salazar, in an effort to subdue him. The Taser reportedly had no noticeable effect on Salazar.
When Salazar suddenly charged the deputies while still armed with the hammer, an officer involved shooting occurred inside the restaurant.
According to the press release from the Coroner’s office, Salazar was transported to the Riverside Community Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at about 10:35 a.m.
No further details have been released at this time regarding this fatal incident.

Jurupa Valley, Calif., On Saturday, November 14, a fatal officer involved shooting occurred at a Jurupa Valley Subway after a suspect charged at deputies while armed with a hammer. Just prior to the 911 call that summoned deputies, the suspect was reportedly outside the store destroying things with the hammer.
According to Deputy Munoz, of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Media Information Bureau, at about 10:00 a.m., deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Jurupa Valley Station responded to the report of an unknown trouble call inside the restaurant.
The Subway restaurant where the shooting occurred is located in the 2900 block of Rubidoux Boulevard, on the northwest corner at the intersection with 30th St., in Jurupa Valley. The Subway shares a building with an AM/PM convenience store and is located at an Arco gas station.

The person who called 911 to report the incident, reportedly told sheriff’s dispatchers that the unidentified man was outside the restaurant smashing and breaking things with a hammer. A few minutes later, a frantic employee called 911 again to report the man had entered the restaurant, still armed with the hammer. At that point, the employees inside the restaurant fled into the back of the building.
When the deputies arrived, they encountered an adult male, who was still armed with a hammer and was still inside the restaurant. The deputies gave a number of loud verbal commands for the suspect to drop the hammer, however the suspect refused to obey the orders he was being given.
When the suspect continued to refuse to drop the hammer, one of the deputies used a Taser to stop the suspect, in an effort to subdue him. However, the Taser had no noticeable effect on the suspect.

The X26 Taser, used by Riverside County sheriff’s deputies, is a “Less Than Lethal” electroshock weapon. The small, gun shaped, weapon fires two tiny dart-like electrodes, to deliver a temporary electric current meant to disrupt voluntary control of muscles causing, “neuromuscular incapacitation”.
According to Taser International, someone who is effectively struck by a Taser typically experiences stimulation of their sensory nerves and motor nerves, resulting in strong involuntary muscle contractions. The taser is meant to allow law enforcement officers to deal with violent or potentially violent people from a safer distance.
After being tasered, the suspect charged toward the deputies with the hammer still in his hand, at which time an officer involved shooting occurred.
Immediately after the shooting the deputies put out an emergency call for priority assistance (11-99/Shots Fired) and called for an ambulance and other emergency first responders as well as additional assistance.
According to Deputy Munoz, the suspect was transported to a local area hospital at approximately 10:25 a.m., where he later succumbed to his injuries. The suspect’s identity was being withheld pending notification of the man’s next of kin.

Deputy Munoz stated no deputies or any of the restaurant employees were injured during the fatal shooting incident.
Investigators from the Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.
About the incident, Deputy Munoz wrote in a press release, “This is an active and ongoing case and no further details will be released at this time. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave per Department policy. The involved officer’s name will not be released at this time.”
Continuing, Deputy Munoz wrote, “The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department encourages anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Investigator Gonzalez at the Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station at (951) 955-2600 or Investigator Paz at the Central Homicide Unit at (951) 955-2777.”
