4 Car Pile-Up W/Rollover Snarls Traffic On I-10 In Thousand Palms For Hours

Two people were injured on Sunday afternoon, in a four-vehicle accident on Interstate 10. One of the vehicle’s involved in the accident rolled over, causing the occupants to become trapped and requiring extrication.
According to an incident log from the Riverside County Fire Department, at about 5:01 p.m., a car collided with a tanker truck while traveling Eastbound on the 10 freeway. The collision occurred in Thousand Palms East of Monterey Avenue. After the initial collision, a separate vehicle rolled over, causing major damage to the vehicle. A fourth vehicle was involved in the collision, however as of this report it was not known how that vehicle was involved.
21 firefighters responded to the accident, which was so severe it required three engine companies, one truck company and one overhead spotter. Two victims from inside the vehicle that rolled over needed to be extricated from the wreckage.
One person reportedly suffered major injuries and another suffered minor ones. The other two victims declined medical help at the scene. Both injured victims were stabilized by paramedics before being transported to a local hospital for further treatment.
The Riverside County Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Team responded to the location to clean up fuel that had leaked from the tanker truck following the collision.
According to the CHP, all freeway lanes were re-open to normal traffic after approximately 4 1/2 hours.
