During a late night press conference, Chief Jarrod Burguan of the San Bernardino Police Department, identified the suspects killed in a shootout with law enforcement officers following a mass shooting at the Inland Regional Center.
The two deceased suspects were identified as Syed Farook, 28, a San Bernardino County employee, and Tashfeen Malik, 27. The official announcement regarding the identification of the two suspects came approximately 12 hours after initial reports of gunfire were received by law enforcement officers.
Numerous conflicting reports indicated Farook and Malik were either married or involved in a relationship. Chief Burguan described the couple as being “romantically involved”, however relatives told the Associated Press that the couple was married.
Farook, who Chief Burguan confirmed to be a U.S. citizen, was an environmental specialist and worked for the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health. The county agency Farook reportedly worked for handles restaurant inspections and vector control among other services, and was holding their annual holiday party in a conference room it had rented, when the attack began.
During the press conference, Chief Burguan said Farook was attending the event with other county employees before he had an argument with a co-worker and left angrily. The shooting began approximately 10 to 20 minutes later when two or three suspects armed with “assault style” rifles and reportedly clad in body armor and ski masks entered the conference room and began firing on the victims.
The San Bernardino County Division of Environmental Health Services, which handles restaurant inspections and vector control among other services, was holding a holiday party in a conference room it had rented.
14 people were confirmed killed and 17 others were injured in the mass shooting, which is being called the nations worst shooting of this nature in three years. In the hours following the shooting, numerous law enforcement agencies flooded into the area to assist with the lengthy and chaotic room-to-room search at the Inland Regional Center and ensuing evacuation of hundreds of people from the huge complex and multiple buildings where the incident occurred.
Several hours after the initial reports of gunfire, law enforcement officers were following up on tips and investigative leads that led them to a home in Redlands that was connected to Farook. The home was reportedly just two miles from the location of the initial shooting incident. That was when officers reportedly first spotted the suspects’ dark-colored SUV.
During a short vehicle pursuit, one of the suspects reportedly fired at pursuing officers through the rear window of the SUV. When the suspects’ vehicle either stopped or became disabled, a gun battle occurred. Video/Audio of the shootout indicated the gun battle raged for nearly three full minutes.

Farook and Malik were both killed during that gun battle, which left one officer injured. Another as of yet unidentified person was seen fleeing from the SUV during the gun battle, and has since been detained, according to David Bowdich of the FBI. Bowdich said at an earlier press conference the third subjects’ involvement was unclear and law enforcement officers were still working to determine that persons involvement in the incident.
Burguan stated police had not yet determined a motive for the mass shooting, but believed the attack was planned well in advance. In answering reporters’ questions during the late night press conference, Burguan stated domestic terrorism has not been ruled out.
Farhan Khan, identified as Farook’s brother-in-law, told reporters he was shocked by Farook’s involvement in the fatal shooting at an evening press conference in Anaheim, California. The conference had been organized by the Los Angeles office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California.
Khan, acting as a spokesperson for Farook’s family, expressed sorrow for the victims of the shooting and wished them a speedy recovery. Asked about Farook’s involvement in the shooting, Khan said, “I have no idea why would he do that, why he would do something like this.”
With both suspects confirmed dead and the third possible suspect being detained and questioned regarding their involvement in this shooting, the focus of this investigation has now turned towards trying to determine and understand the issues that led up to the fatal shooting that forever changed the lives of those who knew the more than two dozen victims killed or wounded in yesterday’s seemingly senseless tragedy and slaughter.

Chief Burguan addresses the media during a press conference to update information about this fatal shooting incident.
During a press conference, Chief Jarrod Burguan of the San Bernardino Police Department, confirmed two subjects had been killed during a shootout with law enforcement officers at the conclusion of a vehicle pursuit that ended in S/E San Bernardino near the city of Redlands.
According to Chief Burguan, a third subject was detained in connection with this investigation, however Chief Burguan could not confirm if that subject had anything to do with the mass shooting incident. That subject was detained near the scene of the fatal officer involved shooting after being seen fleeing over walls and through yards.
Chief Burguan stated the two subjects involved in the shootout had not yet been officially identified, and only described them as a male adult and a female adult.
During the press conference, Chief Burguan confirmed a second improvised explosive device had been discovered at the Inland Regional Center, where the initial shooting incident occurred. According to Chief Burguan, a bomb squad was at the location preparing to render the device safe.

At 3:35 p.m., another improvised explosive device was discovered at the location. As of this report, it was unknown what the status of that initially discovered explosive device was.

According to multiple reports, there are now 14 victims confirmed dead. Additionally, 17 victims were reportedly injured in the initial shooting incident.
One officer was injured during a shootout with suspects at conclusion of a vehicle pursuit and has been transported to a local hospital with what has been described as non-life-threatening injuries.
Two suspects have reportedly been hit in the shootout. Multiple news sources are reporting one of the suspects involved in the officer involved shooting has been killed. A second suspect was reportedly gravely injured in the shootout with law enforcement officers.
One suspect, reportedly wearing an orange shirt and camouflage pants was being pursued eastbound away from location of the officer involved shooting. Multiple reports indicate suspect was seen fleeing over walls and through yards.

A vehicle pursuit of a black SUV possibly related to this shooting incident has ended in a wild shoot out, with at least two suspects reportedly shot and possibly deceased. A third suspect was reported to have led officers on a foot pursuit. That third suspect has reportedly been taken into custody.

As many as 20 people were shot Wednesday at a social services office in San Bernardino, and officials have said they are looking for up to three “active shooters.”
The San Bernardino Fire Department said the shooting took place on the 1300 block of Waterman Avenue, near Orange Show Road. The shooting reportedly began at about 11 a.m.

A spokesperson for the San Bernardino Police Department told reporters at the scene up to three shooters were reported inside the Inland Regional Center. Officers have not secured the building and are in the process of going door-to-door.
The suspects are reportedly armed with assault rifles and were possibly wearing body armor and ski masks.
The Inland Regional Center provides services to disabled people and others in need. Inland Regional Center’s employs over 650 staff at its facilities in San Bernardino and Riverside counties, providing services to more than 30,000 people.
