Riverside Fire personnel assist elderly, homeless gentleman – giving him a pair of their own shoes

RIVERSIDE – An unexpected gift of kindness from Riverside Fire personnel, left one homeless man’s faith in humanity restored and left his feet much warmer and dryer.
Fire personnel from Riverside Fire Department’s Engine 6-C were returningĀ to their station-house after a long day of training on Jan. 14, shortly after 6:00 p.m., when they noticed an elderly homeless gentleman walking very slowly along the side of the freeway overpass on Columbia. The firefighters saw the man had no shoes and was walking barefoot. Engine 6 immediately pulled over and offered to assist the gentleman.
Thinking quickly, Firefighter David Gilstrap retrieved his own tennis shoes, which had been inside the cab of the engine.
Captain Rob Gabler assisted the unidentified elderly gentleman, carefully placing the shoes onto the man’s feet, quickly and quietly assessing him for any other immediate medical needs.
Fire personnel offered the man some water as well as other assistance, which he graciously turned down. However the gentleman was reportedly very grateful for the small gift of kindness shown to him in the form of an unexpected, warm, dry pair of shoes.
This was just another amazing example of everything our local emergency first responders do to help the members of the communities in which they serve.
