RIVERSIDE: Probationer arrested while trying to steal car
RIVERSIDE – Riverside Police officers arrested a Riverside resident on Jan. 28, as he was in the process of attempting to break into a vehicle. The suspect was found to be in possession of burglary tools and was on probation for a previous vehicle theft, according to Riverside PD officials.
Erik Sandoval was arrested while trying to break into a vehicle in Riverside.
At about 7:30 a.m., Riverside Police officers responded to the 5800 block of Montgomery Street after a witness called 911 to report seeing a subject stealing her boyfriend’s car.
Officers arrived within minutes and located the suspect, who was using a long copper wire fashioned with a hook on the end to reach inside the closed window to open the door of the victim’s car.
Officers immediately detained the suspect without incident.
During their investigation, officers identified the suspect as Erik Sandoval, a 23-year-old resident of Riverside. Sandoval told officers he thought the car was stolen and his intention was to break into the car so he could drive it to the police station and turn it in.
A records check revealed the suspect was on probation for auto theft. During a search, officers found Sandoval was in possession of shaved keys and the copper wire loop, which he was using to break into the car.
Officers arrested Sandoval and booked him into the Robert Presley Detention Center for attempted auto theft, possession of burglary tools and a probation violation. He is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail. His arraignment is scheduled on Feb. 1 at the Riverside Hall of Justice.
