HEMET – As many as three people, including a juvenile female, were believed to have been shot and a fourth was injured during a shooting incident on Mar. 9.

Officers from the Hemet Police Department responded to numerous reports of shots fired at an apartment complex at 201 South Yale Street at 11:39 p.m. Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department also responded to assist due to the number of callers and reports of more than one person possibly injured. “Multiple callers reported hearing as many as 12 gunshots,” according to police officials.

Upon arrival, officers located an injured female victim sitting in a car in the driveway of the complex. The female had a hip injury and she told officers she believed she had been shot.

As more officers arrived on scene, they located a second male adult victim in a courtyard at the complex. The male victim was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the hip and groin area, officials explained in a press release.

Officers also located a third victim, a female juvenile, hiding in an apartment. The juvenile victim was suffering from a laceration on her arm that paramedics believed was possibly caused by a grazing gunshot wound.

Upon further investigation officers determined that the female with the injured hip, who was not involved in the initial dispute, had been inside a second story apartment at the location. When she heard gunshots outside, she was so terrified she jumped out of a second story window attempting to flee the area.

Paramedics and fire personnel who were treating the victims at the scene determined that the female who had jumped from her window had not been struck by gunfire. She had broken her hip when she leaped from her window to escape the gunfire.

After stabilizing the three victims, paramedics transported them to local hospitals with what officials described as non-life threatening injuries.

A few hours later, at about 2:30 a.m. on Mar. 10, Banning PD received a call from San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital regarding an adult male who had come into the emergency room with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

In order to determine if the subject was involved in shooting they were investigating, Hemet Police detectives requested that Banning Police officers detain the subject until they could arrive to investigate. However, before Banning Police officers could arrive to detain the man, he fled the hospital.

“The officer’s initial investigation determined the shooting stemmed from an ongoing verbal dispute between multiple subjects from different gangs,” officials said about the shooting. “Witnesses stated that the subjects had been arguing off and on for most of the day.”

No further information was available regarding those injured in the shooting.

Due to the amount of traffic in the area, detectives are asking that anyone who was in the area of 201 S. Yale St. between the hours of 11:00 – 11:30 p.m. who might have any information about the shooting or any information about the events leading up to the shooting call Corporal Gabe Gomez at (951) 765-3729. Callers can remain anonymous.
