Riverside math teacher, arrested for sending, requesting lewd pictures
RIVERSIDE – A math teacher and former water polo coach who just began teaching at Martin Luther King High School in Riverside this year was arrested Thursday, May 12. Officers and detectives from the Riverside Police Department arrested the teacher, identified as 26-year-old Nicholas Janzen, for allegedly sending lewd photographs of himself to at least one of his former students. He also allegedly requested the student return inappropriate pictures of herself to him.
The investigation resulted from allegations made by more than one of Janzen’s former students from his previous place of employment at Notre Dame High School, which is also located in Riverside.
“After extensive follow-up, it was determined Janzen had been sending lewd photos of himself to at least one student he coached, and solicited photos from the student,” a Riverside Police official wrote in a press release.
Janzen was arrested and then immediately released on a written promise to appear in court for two counts of annoying and molesting a child and sending harmful material to a child. Both are misdemeanors.
The press release explained that as soon as police officials notified the Riverside Unified School District regarding their investigation, Janzen was immediately removed from his duties at Martin Luther King High School and placed on administrative leave. After police officials arrested Janzen, he was immediately placed on compulsory leave as required by law.
