Man arrested after fleeing from and fighting with Hemet Police officer
HEMET – A man who was on parole for previous assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer fled from police and then fought with the officer who pursued him, according to an official press release from the department. The violent encounter occurred Wednesday, June 1, in the 500 block of N. San Jacinto Street.
The suspect, who was later identified as Patrick Dominic Halbert, 32, of Hemet, was booked into jail after the incident.
At about 4 p.m., a concerned citizen called 911 to report a man seen acting suspiciously in the area. A Hemet Police Officer was dispatched to the location to investigate and determine if a crime had been or was being committed.
When the officer arrived in the area, Halbert saw him approaching and immediately fled from the officer on foot. The officer chased the fleeing man, calling for priority backup from other officers in the area.
As the officer caught up to the fleeing subject, Halbert suddenly spun around and took a fighting stance towards the officer; at which time a brief struggle ensued.
As Halbert continued actively resisting arrest, the officer subdued him and took the combative man into custody. The officer was not injured during the violent incident, according to a police official.
After Halbert was detained, the officer conducted a records check that revealed Halbert was on parole for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.
The officer arrested Halbert and he was transported to the Southwest Detention Center for violation of his parole and resisting arrest, a misdemeanor.
A jail records search revealed Halbert was being held without bail and was scheduled to be seen at an unspecified court, June 3.
