MORENO VALLEY – An early morning officer involved shooting occurred at about 2 a.m. in Moreno Valley.

“A deputy from the Moreno Valley Police Station was on routine patrol in the area of Canyonstone Drive and Stonebridge Court, within the city of Moreno Valley,” Riverside Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Deputy Armando Munoz explained in a press release about the shooting incident.

As the deputy was patrolling the residential neighborhood, he “observed a stolen vehicle being driven by a male adult,” Munoz said.

The driver, who has not been identified, reportedly parked the stolen vehicle and began walking towards a residence in the 15300 block of Canyonstone Drive. “The officer made contact with the male and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” according to Munoz.

The deputy immediately put out an 11-99 (shots fired – officer needs emergency assistance) call and requested CDF and AMR personnel to the scene to assist the man who was shot.

Within moments of the emergency call for help officers and deputies from multiple other surrounding stations and agencies began converging into the area and quickly established a perimeter around the location.

The deputy requested other responding deputies to bring trauma bags and a gunshot wound kit for the man who was struck by gunfire.

AMR and CDF personnel were on scene within minutes and were working on the subject who was struck by one or more bullets, as countless law enforcement officers were still converging on the scene.

At about 2:20 a.m., paramedics transported the man who had been struck by gunfire to a local area hospital. The wounded subject arrived at the hospital seven minutes later, at 2:27 a.m. “He was treated for non-life threatening injuries,” Munoz explained.

By 2:37 a.m., the sheriff’s Mobile Command Center had been set up nearby at an undisclosed location.

Sheriff’s officials later stated one deputy was involved in the non-fatal shooting.

“The deputy involved was not injured and has been placed on administrative leave per Department policy,” Munoz said.

The involved deputy’s name was not released.

Investigators from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Departments Central Homicide Unit responded and assumed the investigation.
