HEMET – A robbery suspect was shot with his own gun during an early morning struggle with a victim he was attempting to rob, June 15, according to Hemet Police Lieutenant Eddie Pust. The attempted robbery and shooting happened in the 1100 block of Rosalia Ave, in Hemet.

The robbery suspect – who was shot with his own gun during the struggle with his intended victim – was later identified as Brady Charles Shirley Jr., 20, of Hemet.

After their investigation officers arrested Shirley. He was treated for his gunshot wound at a nearby hospital and later transported to the Murrieta Southwest Detention Center where he was booked for seven felonies related to the incident.

Hemet Police emergency dispatchers received a 911 call at about 4:35 a.m., from a citizen who reported hearing two subjects fighting nearby; followed by two gunshots.

Upon arrival, witnesses directed officers to two separate nearby residences, where the two men were seen fleeing following the shooting. Officers located both subjects, who reside at the two separate locations witnesses saw them flee to.

From the beginning of the investigation, Shirley was extremely uncooperative with officers, who discovered he had sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his lower leg.

After interviewing several witnesses and the two subjects involved in the struggle and shooting, investigating officers determined the victim fought back against Shirley during the attempted robbery and Shirley sustained the gunshot wound from his own gun while he was attempting to rob the victim. Officers did not identify the victim.

During the struggle the firearm Shirly had used to try to rob the victim discharged two times, striking the Shirley in his own lower leg. The second round struck the victims’ shirt, narrowly missing his upper body. The victim received a minor injury to one of his hands during the attempted robbery and struggle.

Based on witness and victim statements, officers arrested Shirley.

A jail records search revealed Shirley was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, attempted robbery, being a felon in possession of a firearm, negligent discharge of a firearm, resisting arrest with violence, violation of parole, and a felony gang enhancement. He is being held without bail and is scheduled to be arraigned June 20.
