DUI believed to be factor in last weeks’ head-on collision in East Hemet
EAST HEMET – Few details have been released following a violent, head-on collision that occurred on Fairview Ave at the intersection with Palm Ave in East Hemet, June 25, at about 9:12 p.m. The accident sent two people to the hospital with moderate to severe injuries
One vehicle, described as a silver Kia, was reportedly traveling northbound and the other, described only as a small white four-door sedan, was traveling southbound on Fairview Ave when the driver of the Kia crossed into the southbound lane, causing the head-on collision.
The driver of the Kia, who has not yet been identified was believed to have been driving under the influence. Witnesses who called 911 to report the accident told emergency dispatchers that he attempted to flee the scene after the collision but was detained by witnesses.
Paramedics treated the victims at the scene of the violent collision before they were transported to a local area hospital. According to California Highway Patrol officials; the two parties involved sustained moderate to severe injuries.
Fairview Avenue was temporarily closed to through traffic due to debris and vehicle parts that were strewn across the entire roadway.
Both vehicles sustained major damage and had to be towed from the location.
The circumstances of the collision are still under investigation by CHP. Requests for more information related to this accident have yet to be answered.
One officer at the scene said alcohol or drug intoxication had not been ruled out and were believed to have possibly been a contributing factor in the accident.
