Lake Elsinore resident killed in traffic accident on Lakeshore Dr

LAKE ELSINORE – A man was killed Saturday, Aug. 6 when a truck he was driving smashed into a palm tree. The accident happened on Lakeshore Drive near Dryden Street in Lake Elsinore, according to Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant Todd Grimm.

Riverside County Coroner officials later identified the driver killed in the traffic accident as Ida Bustamante, 41, of Lake Elsinore.

The coroner’s release listed Bustamante’s time of injury as 12:54 a.m. His time of death was listed as 1:03 a.m. The exact location of Bustamante’s fatal accident was listed as West Lakeshore Drive about 87 feet south of Dryden Street.

Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Lake Elsinore Police Station and other emergency first responders were dispatched to the scene of a major injury traffic accident at about 12:55 a.m. after a witness called 911 to report the collision.

Deputies arrived within minutes and located Bustamante trapped inside the vehicle. Cal Fire/Riverside County Firefighters responded to perform a cut and rescue to extricate the victim from the wrecked truck.

Despite their efforts, Bustamante succumbed to his injuries and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies conducted an investigation that revealed Bustamante was traveling westbound on Lakeshore Drive when his vehicle left the roadway for an unknown reason. The truck first sideswiped a power pole and then collided with a palm tree.

California Edison was summoned to the location to check the integrity of the pole, which sustained minor damage.

Lakeshore Drive was closed for several hours while deputies conducted their investigation. The investigation is continuing to determine if alcohol may be a factor in this collision.
