SANTA ROSA PLATEAU – Two men were shot in the 43800 block of El Calamar Road near Carancho Road, in the unincorporated community of Santa Rosa Tuesday, August 16. One man was killed and the other suffered at least one gunshot wound and was being treated at a local hospital.
Central Homicide investigators responded to the report and with assistance from investigators from the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station assumed the investigation.
During the course of the investigation, officials identified Agustin Contreras Cruz, 48 of Temecula, as a suspect in the murder and attempted murder, according to Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant Jeff Buompensiero.
On August 23, at about 7 p.m., investigators located and arrested Cruz at the Inland Valley Medical Center in Murrieta. It was not immediately known if he was arrested at the hospital while working as an employee or was at the hospital receiving medical treatment. He was booked into the Southwest Detention Center.
A jail record search revealed Cruz was booked into jail on suspicion of murder, attempted murder possession of marijuana and violation of probation. He is being held in lieu of $1,000,000 bail. His next scheduled court date is scheduled for Aug 26 at the southwest Justice Center in Murrieta.

Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Southwest Station responded to the fatal shooting at about 8:15 p.m. Responding deputies found two men who had been shot at the location, according to Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant Jeff Buompensiero.
“One of the victims was transported to a local area hospital and is undergoing treatment for his injuries,” Buompensiero wrote in a press release. “The remaining victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The victims have not been identified by sheriff’s officials and are being withheld pending notification of their family members.
Based on the circumstances investigators from the Southwest Sheriff’s Station and the department’s Central Homicide Unit responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

Trevor Montgomery spent 10 years in the U.S. Army as an Orthopedic Specialist before joining the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department in 1998. He was medically retired after losing his leg in an off-duty accident.

Trevor has been married for more than 26 years and was a foster parent to more than 60 children over 13 years. He is now an adoptive parent and has 13 children and 10 (soon to be 12) grandchildren.
