RIVERSIDE – A 16-year-old girl was seriously injured when she was struck by a Riverside Transit Agency commuter bus on Tuesday, Sept. 6. The girl was reportedly enjoying a morning bicycle ride with her mother before school when she was hit by the small bus in Riverside. The accident happened near the intersection of Shannon Road and Central Avenue at about 6:40 a.m., according to Riverside Police officials.

Riverside Police officers and other emergency first responders rushed to the accident scene after City of Riverside emergency dispatchers received several 911 calls from motorists and witnesses who called to report the accident.

Officers quickly arrived at the accident scene and found the girl down in the roadway. Paramedics and other medical personnel treated the young victim before they transported her in critical condition to a local area hospital. She reportedly suffered internal injuries and leg injuries in the violent collision.

The victim, who has not been named, was still in critical condition as of Tuesday evening.

The bus driver immediately stopped after the accident and was reportedly cooperating with an accident investigation.

The vehicle that hit the girl was described as a Dial-A-Ride bus, which is about half the size of a typical RTA bus. There was one passenger on board the bus at the time of the accident. Neither the bus driver nor the passenger were injured in the accident.

Accident investigators responded to the accident scene to assist in the accident investigation. The investigation is ongoing and it has not yet been released how the accident occurred.

During their investigation, officers closed Central Avenue to through traffic between Van Buren Boulevard and Hillside Avenue. The road was closed for about six hours during their investigation. The road was reportedly re-opened at about 1 p.m.
