RIVERSIDE – A teenage girl on her way to school was critically injured when she was hit by a car while using a cross walk at the intersection of La Sierra and Cochran Avenues Sept. 7.
At about 7:17 a.m., the City of Riverside’s Dispatch Center received numerous calls regarding the vehicle versus pedestrian hit-and-run traffic collision.
The driver briefly stopped but failed to render medical aid or help the girl in any way before fleeing the area prior to the arrival of emergency services.
Upon arrival officers located the pedestrian – identified only as a 14-year-old female – lying in the southbound lanes of traffic on La Sierra Avenue.
Paramedics treated the young victim at the scene before they transported her to Loma Linda Children’s Hospital with critical injuries.
Officers at the scene quickly gathered information regarding the suspect and the vehicle she was driving and broadcast the information out to surrounding officers and agencies.
An officer in the area located the vehicle and conducted a traffic enforcement stop at the 91 Freeway and La Sierra Avenue. The driver and vehicle were positively identified by several witnesses.
The Riverside Police Departments Major Accident Investigation Team responded and is currently handling the investigation.
Based on statements obtained from the witnesses, the victim was crossing La Sierra Avenue within the south cross walk when she was struck by a vehicle making a left turn from westbound Cochran Avenue to southbound La Sierra Avenue.
The alleged driver of the hit and run vehicle, who has only been identified as a 42-year-old woman, was taken to the police station for questioning by detectives. Despite the positive identifications by multiple witnesses, the driver was later released pending further investigation into the hit and run. It was not immediately known why detectives allowed the woman to leave the station without being arrested.
