BANNING: In custody death at jail spurs “suspicious death” investigation
BANNING – Central Homicide Investigators are conducting what the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is calling a “suspicious death” investigation after an inmate died while in custody at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility Saturday, Sept 17. The facility is located at 1627 S. Hargrave Street in Banning.
The victim, who has only been described as a white male adult was found “suffering from traumatic injuries,” according to Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant Jeff Buompensiero. Deputies reportedly located the unresponsive male inside his cell.
“Deputies and medical staff performed life saving measures; however, the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene,” Buompensiero explained in a press release about the incident.
The name of the victim has not been released, pending notification of his family.
Deputies assigned to the correctional facility responded to a call inside one of the housing units within the facility at about 3:10 p.m. When they arrived at the housing unit, they located the deceased victim.
Detectives from the correctional facility and the department’s Central Homicide Unit responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.
Sheriff’s officials have not released how many inamtes were in the victim’s cell at the time of the deadly incident or what the man was in jail for.
“No arrests have been made in this case,” Buompensiero said. “This case is ongoing.”

Would you check and see if it’s my son, Philip Perry? If so, please prepare me. I couldn’t handle the news.
As soon as I know anything I will share the information.

Asking the public for help in info of the event??
I would think the video/surveillance would have all the answers needed, as well as guards that I’m sure we’re posted to that pods area.
If cameras and designated guards were both doing their job, both would be able to give your answers to this MURDER!
Is not each and every cell/pod monitored 24/7?
No, they are not. They have many camera’s, especially at the newer jail facilities, but Banning is one of, if not the oldest jail currently being used in RivCo. Even with all the cameras they have, there are very many “dead zones” where the cameras do not reach and are out of view.

It’s well known that they put hits on people in there and the drug use is rampant. The inmates have drugs in there and use them.
That is pretty much the case for all jails and state prisons. There will always be drugs available in lock down facilities, unfortunately.

Seriously how long does it take for RSO to notify next of kin? My son is currently a resident of this facility, and I haven’t heard from him for days. I’m figuring they’re on lock down? That’s why no word. But it is quit nerve racking not knowing, so any news would be good news about now! Thx for your dedication, Cassie
Cassie, I believe the family notification has already been made, but the sheriff’s department has not yet publicly released the information. I would suggest you call the jail directly to inquire about your son. The number to call is (951) 922-7300. They should be able to provide you the status of your son.
By the way, I checked the Jail inmate locator, and if your son’s name is Zechariah and he is 23-years-old, it shows him as still being there at the jail, in housing unit 09DC. If he was no longer at the facility (for whatever reason) he would not still be listed.

Anymore info?
Nothing at all has been released yet. Not even the identity of the victim.
