MENIFEE –  Three occupants of a Toyota Corolla were critically injured and transported to a local hospital after their vehicle was broadsided by a Ford Explorer in an early morning hit and run traffic collision Thursday, Sept. 29. The hit and run accident happened in the 27000 block of Newport and Bradley Roads in Menifee.

Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Menifee Police Station responded to reports of a major injury hit and run collision after several motorists and witnesses called 911 to report the incident, according to Riverside Sheriff’s Sergeant J.P. Strang.

After a thorough investigation, deputies arrested Matthew Peter Stockdale, 31, of Temecula.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they learned that the driver of the Ford that hit the Toyota had fled on foot.

Deputies conducted a preliminary investigation and determined the driver who fled was Stockdale. They also learned Stockdale’s driver’s license was suspended for a prior DUI.

Deputies later located Stockdale at his residence on Kelham Court in Temecula. He is suspected of being under the influence at the time of this collision, according to Strang.

Stockdale was arrested and booked at the Southwest Detention Center.

The Menifee Traffic Reconstruction Unit responded and assumed the investigation. The road was closed for several hours while deputies investigated the major injury hit and run collision.

At the conclusion of their investigation, deputies re-opened Newport Road at 7:40 a.m.

A jail record search revealed Stockdale was booked on suspicion of felony DUI causing great bodily injuries, DUI, hit and run and driving on a suspended license.
