RIVERSIDE – Pedestrian killed crossing road, driver flees scene

RIVERSIDE – A pedestrian died after he was hit by a vehicle in the area of Columbia Avenue west of Mulberry Street Saturday, Oct. 1. After the accident the driver of the sedan fled the scene, leaving the victim dying in the roadway.

The Riverside Police Department’s Dispatch Center received several calls from citizens reporting the vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision at about 9:52 p.m.

Riverside Police and Fire personnel responded to the area and found the victim in the street suffering from fatal injuries.

Riverside County Coroner officials later identified the victim as Marcos Bernabe, 42, of Riverside The coroner’s release indicated Bernabe was fatally struck at 9:51 p.m. He succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene minutes later at 9:55 p.m. The release also indicated Bernabe was killed on Columbia Avenue about 300 Feet west of Mulberry Street.

Based on witness statements, officers determined the pedestrian was crossing Columbia Avenue from the south sidewalk to the north sidewalk just west of Mulberry St. when he was struck by silver sedan vehicle going westbound.

The vehicle failed to stop or attempt to render aid to the mortally wounded pedestrian. The sedan was last seen fleeing westbound on Columbia Ave. 

The Riverside Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T) responded to the deadly hit and run and is currently handling the investigation.

Trevor Montgomery spent 10 years in the U.S. Army as an Orthopedic Specialist before joining the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department in 1998. He was medically retired after losing his leg in an off-duty accident.
