RIVERSIDE – City of Riverside firefighters are crediting several good Samaritans with saving a man from a fiery death after the driver lost control of his car and smashed into a palm tree Monday, Nov. 7.

After the car plowed into the tree it burst into flames. The fiery wreck happened at 1:03 p.m., in the area of Alessandro Boulevard and Mission Grove Parkway in Riverside.

City of Riverside firefighters and police officers and American Medical Response personnel were dispatched to the solo-vehicle traffic collision after several citizens called 911 to report the accident. Callers told 911 emergency dispatchers the driver was unconscious and trapped inside his burning vehicle and that flames were spreading to several palm trees.

As the flames intensified, three to four bystanders pulled the unconscious driver from his vehicle, as the fire quickly spread to the rest of the four-door sedan.

“Quick actions by the bystanders prevented further injury to the patient, Riverside Fire Battalion Chief Bruce Vanderhorst said while explaining the heroic actions of the witnesses who saved the driver.
